The book will be available soon

I finished the "Doll Shoe Projects: Felt Boots" book today, and it is currently in review at Amazon. The last time, it took about a day for my book to get accepted, so it will be available soon. The price is the same as for the first book, $2.99 (plus VAT, if applicable).

The "Doll Shoe Projects: Gladiator Sandals with Flat Soles" book will be available at a discounted price ($1.99) at Amazon.com for 7 days starting from January 18.

Boots made of felt and modeling clay

The second Doll Shoe Projects book will be about making boots. This is one project that did not make it in the book, because things didn't go as planned. The yellow felt used for the uppers was already salvaged from another unsuccessful project. Probably should have just scrapped the whole thing, but I didn't want to throw all that felt away.

The pieces for the boots are simple, just the uppers and soles, both made of felt. The grey felt is made of recycled textiles and is 3 mm thick, so it's very stiff.

The first step was to glue the uppers to the edges of the soles. I used PVA glue for this. It works well when gluing pieces of felt together.

When the glue was dry, I sewed the front seams. The boots could be used like this, but my plan was to make the outer soles using modeling clay.

Here you can see the paper pattern on the left and a pattern cut from plastic on the right. The reason I was using a plastic pattern was that it's easier to get the modeling clay off from plastic after shaping the sole by pressing the clay against the pattern.

The clay I used was air-drying modelling foam, but any modeling clay would work. Actually, polymer clay would have been a better choice for the reason explained later in this post.

Here are the soles, shaped using the plastic pattern. I made them slightly bigger than the pattern, because air-drying clay tends to shrink.

Not big enough, it turned out. As you can see, the sole doesn't cover the entire insole and some gray remains visible. With polymer clay, this wouldn't be an issue as they don't shrink, at least not noticeably. At this point, I again considered scrapping the entire project, but decided to go on anyway just to see if this could still be salvaged.

I decided to glue some of that yellow felt to the soles to cover the gray felt. You get exactly the right shape by gluing a bigger piece first and then cutting off the excess.

The final stage was to glue the foam soles in place. I'm not sure I like how the seams between the uppers and foam soles look like, but at least the gray soles are hidden now. I may end up covering the seams with ribbon, but for now, these are good enough.

I've done all but one of the projects I intend to include in the book. The structure of the book is all planned, almost all photos are ready, and I have plenty of notes in Scrivener for writing the actual text. I'm aiming at getting most of it done before the end of the year, because I'll be very busy in January due to starting my studies. We'll see how that goes. The first book remained unfinished for a very long time.

I'm also waiting for a snowfall, because I plan to shoot the cover photos outside and snowy landscape would be perfect for that.

The first Doll Shoe Projects book

I finally finished the book, and it is now available in Amazon. I was planning to make it -50% for the first few days, but it seems that I can't do that. The promotion page says it needs to be available for 30 days first. So, it's $3.29 or whatever that is in your currency. To check it in Amazon.com, click here.

Edit: It seems that the price is actually $2.99 like I set it when publishing the book, but I'm seeing $3.29 due to VAT being added to the price, so your price will be equivalent to $2.99 plus any applicable taxes.

This is the first book in a series of books of doll shoe projects. Each book will have a theme, like this one, and all the materials used for the projects are selected so that they will be as easy to find and as affordable as possible. The projects are described step by step, and everything you need to know is explained, so although some of the techniques are the same as in Techniques for Making Doll Shoes, you do not need that book for making these projects.

The first Doll Shoe Projects book

I've had this book unfinished for a long time. I started it after I wrote Techniques for Making Doll Shoes, but I had so much other stuff to do that I left most of the doll shoe projects for a long time. Now I finally got the last project to be included in the book finished, so I've got all the pictures I need. All text is also written, but it's going to need some editing. This is going to be a series, one type of shoes per book with 4-5 different variations, easy to find and cheap materials, and every step from start to finish explained in detail.

The most common complaint about the technique book was that people wanted instructions from start to finish, but it was a reference book. So, these smaller books will provide just that. Another complaint was that it was mainly about fashion doll shoes (high heels), so this one is for flat-footed dolls, but I'm sure I'll be also doing some high heel projects later.

The editing and publishing will take a few days, but this should be available next week at the latest. I'll probably also make it -50% for the first few days. I'll let you know when it's available by posting here and in Twitter.

Finnish book update

Kenkäkirjan kääntäminen on vielä kesken. Tällä hetkellä käännettynä on noin 80 %, joten suomenkielinen on kyllä tulossa aikanaan. Sillä välin saatavana on suomeksi myöhemmin kirjoittamani pieni kirja Lautanauhoja pienoiskoossa: Vasta-alkajan opas. Linkki vie Amazon.comiin, koska Suomeen tilattavat Kindle-kirjat on ostettava sieltä, mutta kirja löytyy muiltakin Amazonin sivustoilta ASIN-numerolla B00X2SUC3W. Kirjan hinta Suomeen on 1,23 dollaria (0,99 USD + ALV).

Saat Kindle Reading App -sovelluksen ilman lisämaksua täältä: Amazon.com - Read eBooks using the FREE Kindle Reading App on Most Devices. Sen avulla kirjoja voi lukea tietokoneella, taulutietokoneella, älypuhelimella yms.

Lautanauhoja pienoiskoossa -kirjassa on ohjeet kansikuvassa näytettyjen kaltaisten lautanauhojen tekemiseen. Mitään aiempaa kokemusta aiheesta ei tarvita. Välineet ja tarvikkeet luultavasti löytyvät kotoa valmiiksi tai jos ei, niin ne saa halvalla.

Card Weaving in Miniature

As soon as I got the first book finished, I went to work on another one. I would have liked to include more card weaving info in the doll shoe book, but it would have been a too long section, so I left it out. Now I wrote a short book just about making miniature card-woven bands.

The book is called Card Weaving in Miniature. It's a book for anybody who doesn't know anything about card weaving, but wants to make some bands for miniature projects.

The book is now available

It is a surprise to myself that I actually managed to finish the book and it is now available for Kindle devices and readers on the Amazon web sites. It's called: Techniques for Making Doll Shoes. The link takes you to the Amazon.com web site. The links to the book on the other Amazon web sites are as follows:

Amazon.co.uk: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00UVHDRTI
Amazon.de: http://www.amazon.de/dp/B00UVHDRTI

Amazon.in: http://www.amazon.in/dp/B00UVHDRTI
Amazon.com.au: http://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B00UVHDRTI

For some reason, the listings do not show a cover photo, although there is one. I hope it is just an update problem and the cover will be shown later. This is what it looks like:

The book has 309 pictures (photos and a few drawings) and almost 42,000 words. It is a reference book, describing techniques for making various parts of doll shoes and combining them. You can find much of the information in this blog, but the book has everything organized in a (hopefully) logical order. It also has lots of new photos, which look a lot less cluttered than what I normally have in the blog posts.

Edit: If you want to check the book's table of contents, you can get it in PDF format by clicking here.

Note to Finnish readers:
Suomenkielinen versio on työn alla ja toivon mukaan ilmestyy jossain vaiheessa, mutta käännettävää on paljon, joten mitään tarkkaa aikaa on mahdotonta luvata. Jos ja kun se valmistuu, se tulee todennäköisesti saataville myös Amazonin kautta, koska kotimaiset e-kirjojen verkkokaupat ovat tehneet julkaisusta todella monimutkaista (ainakin ne, jotka olen tarkistanut).

Book update

It's finally happening. I just wrote the last missing part of the book (Introduction) and submitted a request for ISBN as I want to do this thing properly. The submission form asked for publishing time and I stated March 2015, so it is set now. The book will become available some time next month. I'm aiming at the beginning of the month, but cannot promise that for sure.

The book has 223 pages (that's what MS Word shows) and the current word count is about 41,000. That will probably change a bit due to some editing that I still need to do, but it'll give you some idea. Additionally, there are over 300 photos as I believe that illustrating the steps is crucial in a book like this.

I will let you know when the book becomes available in Amazon. Remember that you do not need a Kindle device for reading Kindle books as you can download the free reader for your PC from Amazon's site.

Painting resin soles

The latest video is about painting resin soles. I'm painting a pair of Monster High soles with gold color and towards the end of the video I'm telling a bit about how the book project is going.

Book update

I just want to let you know that I am still writing the book. The current word count is about 12,500 and there are lots of photos already. I have been taking new photos to get better quality than in the ones I have used in the blog, but due to the uniqueness of some photos, I will be using some old ones as well.

The structure of the book is now set and shouldn't change much after this. Chapters 1–4 present some tools and materials, chapters 5–6 are about different casting methods and making foot lasts of your doll's feet, chapters 7–9 introduce different ways of making soles and heels for shoes, and chapters 10–13 describe making uppers for different kinds of shoes.

It is really great that I don't have to worry about the length of the book or the number of photos, because there won't be any printing involved. I'm including a lot of example photos of what can be done with different materials and photos that show a sequence of actions for certain processes.

Finally, here is one of the new photos I have taken. I don't remember, if I have ever shown these before. These shoes are made of copper sheet using super glue and they are among my earliest experiments in making doll shoes (around 1998, I think). The thin copper sheet I used bends really easily, so these are purely decorative and cannot be used on a doll.

Fix for sticky silicone

On my first try of making silicone moulds, I got some problems with the hardener and parts of the mould remained sticky. This time, I tried to mix the hardener to the silicone more thoroughly, but still got some sticky parts. However, I found a fix for the problem. It occurred to me that as the hardener mixed in the silicone hardens it, hardener applied with a brush to the sticky surface should do the same. I tried it and it worked.

The uneven parts in the picture were the ones that remained sticky. They have a slightly different color, because the hardener is blue (to make it easier to see if it has been mixed in the silicone well enough).

Update on the book:

I have written most of the chapters about mould making and casting, plus quite a lot about materials. I currently have about 9,000 words written, plus 70 photos. There will be quite a lot of photos in the book, because it is so much easier to show things in pictures. It should also be easier for people with less than perfect command of English. The current plan is to have the book available only in English, although a Finnish version is also possible later, if I feel like translating the book and have time to do it.

The main change to the original plan is that I won't include any example projects. The book will be long enough with the other material. I'm thinking about a possibility of making another book later about example projects. First I need to get this one finished and see how much interest there is.

Book about doll shoe making techniques

I have been planning on collecting together and organizing information on tools, materials and techniques for making doll shoes. Much of the information is already in this blog, but it is here and there and may not be easy to find. That is why I'm planning on writing a book about the subject.

To keep the costs down, I am planning on making it an ebook, specifically a Kindle book available through Amazon. This way, I do not need to limit the number of pages and can be as elaborate as I think is necessary.

Considering my track record of unfinished projects, I cannot make any promises about if and when the book will be ready, but I have started planning the structure of the book and what information to include. This is where you, the readers of my blog, enter the picture. If there is a specific subject you would like to see included or any other requests, leave a comment to this blog post or tweet it to @kenkafriikki.

The preliminary plan for the structure is to have four main parts: Tools, Materials, Techniques for different parts of shoes, and example projects showing how to make shoes from start to finish (also different scales and different skill levels from very easy to ones using advanced techniques). This may change once I start writing the book and see how the structure works.

Update: I checked the sales of my previous book and as it seems not to be selling anymore, I lowered the price. You can find it here. It is not exactly cheap even at the new price, but an even lower price would mean all profits going to Blurb. Actually, the printing cost is the main reason of choosing the ebook format for the next book.

The actual book

The book arrived today. I took a picture so that I'm holding it to let you see the size. The print quality is good and my only grumble is that the insides of the covers are white although the background on the front and back covers and all pages is black, but it's a minor issue.

The preview below shows some pages from various parts of the book. The spreads are not shown correctly in the preview as it shows odd pages on left and even pages on right and it should be just the other way round.

The Fashion Doll Shoes book

The book is ready. I've been going through the text over and over again after making the corrections suggested by the proofreader, but I finally decided that further editing would not improve it. I ordered my copy today and after I have received it and made sure there are no problems, I will make the book available in Blurb.

The book covers will look like this:

Suomenkielinen versio tulee saataville myöhemmin.

I'm making a book

I was looking at old photos, when I realized that the first pictures I have of doll shoes I have made are from August 2000. That's ten years ago.

I had been thinking of collecting photos of finished shoes in a photo book, which would have just the images. However, I thought it could be nicer to make a sort of "first ten years" book with a little more thought. So, I installed Blurb's BookSmart and started working.

The picture shows that the book has 26 pages, but that's just at the moment. I'm almost halfway through, but I don't really know how long it will be, except that it'll be under 80 pages due to the price categories. The cheapest option is 40 pages or less and the next level is 80 pages or less and that's what I aim at.

I'm not good at the layout stuff, so I'm using the ready made templates available in the program. I'm using a combination of chronological order and categorizing by the doll. The chapters have a short introduction of the doll and some other comments and then pictures of the shoes. There's one or two spreads per doll and boots will have a chapter of their own.

If I ever get this finished and if it turns out all right, I will probably make the book publicly available in Blurb in case anyone is interested.
